For those of us immersed in the day-to-day practice of medicine, or in close study of health and health care, it is easy to lose sight of the big picture. The very intensity of our focus can blind us to crucial questions of health care delivery: What’s the effect of poverty on epidemiology? How do we take into account the social as well as physical side-effects of our medicine? The discipline known as Social Medicine was launched to address such blind spots, and the Gesundheit! Institute has a unique contribution to the theory and practice of Social Medicine.

This spring, the Gesundheit! Institute is offering a week-end intensive looking at the impacts of social context on health, disease, and the practice of medicine. The Social Medicine Symposium is aimed at students and mid-career professionals who seek training in global health delivery concepts and skills. Based on the Gesundheit! philosophy that “one cannot separate the health of the individual from the health of the community from the health of the world,” Social Medicine offers a powerful alternative perspective through which to consider wellness, in contrast to a view dominated by concepts of chemical imbalance, genetics, and individual pathology.

Wellness is not an individual project. It is a communal project.

In keeping with the original sense of the word “symposium,” this educational weekend will also be convivial—suffused with fun and camaraderie, applying our principles to the event itself, in the midst of the warmth and beauty of the ambiance on the Gesundheit land in West Virginia.
