John Glick, M.D.
John Glick is a physician, acupuncturist and humorist with a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry. He practiced family medicine in rural Shenandoah Valley for 10 years before opening Harrisonburg’s first acupuncture clinic in 1991. He serves on the board of directors of the Gesundheit! Institute, a service-oriented effort combining healthcare with fun, friendship and humor, initiated by Glick’s friend, Dr. Patch Adams.
John Glick has traveled the United States and 40 countries throughout the world as a "humanitarian clown" visiting prisons, hospitals, nursing homes, orphanages, and refugee camps. He has done musical performances for local audiences in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, prisoners in San Quentin, doctors and nurses in Ottawa, clowns in Baltimore, and school children in Shanghai. He has made inspirational presentations on humor, service and health throughout the US, Canada, Europe and Latin America. He is an avid musician with a love of traditional music from the Southern Appalachian mountain culture. He performs musical comedy with his brother-in-law Steve Phillips, poking fun at each other and whoever takes themselves too seriously. John has a deep love for humanity, the various forms of religious expression and a reverence for the miracle of life.
He is the father of his wonderfully tyrannical daughter, Terra — and wouldn’t have it any other way!
John loves poetry, play, friends, children, teenagers, old people, simple food, beautiful skies, snorkeling, hugs, faces, new places, old places, hiking, stretching, fiddling, dancing, reading, laughing, silliness, silence, dreams, peace and vacuuming naked.
John's friend Patch sends him works by Nobel prize novelists, most recently Independent People by Haldoor Laxness and Riders of the Chariot by Patrick White — both highly recommended authors and works.
He lives in a restored 100-year-old chicken house on the banks of the Shenandoah River in Virginia with the moon rising over the Blue Ridge Mountains peeking through his bedroom window.
John has lectured and performed extensively throughout the US and internationally, combining storytelling, poetry, music, and his love of all people into informative, inspirational and warm reflections on health, humor, illness, death, love, laughter, spirit and joy.
